161 days in a row…

161 days in a row at the cinema! Today I saw Marrowbone.

There is too much not enough in Marrowbone, which is basically a ghost story with no ghosts, where we don’t know what we’re meant to be afraid of so we aren’t.

In this gothic family drama (set either in the 19th century or 1969), everything comes together (deft directing, nice cinematography, a solid cast…) for a nicely told tale…except the tale.

The story’s pacing is unbalanced: we’re given entirely too little information at the outset, then a dump of information all at once at the end.

Note to the director: you’re not allowed to call it a ‘surprise ending’ if the viewer doesn’t suspect what the ending is. By simply telling the entire tale in the final 20 minutes, you’ve only succeeded in wasting the first 90.

If you want to see a better version of this film, watch The Others or Crimson Peak instead. Out of a possible 10, I have 5 Fs to give.
