164 days in a row at the cinema! Today I saw Russian family drama Теснота (Closeness).
Closeness is like an entry in a dictionary whose language you don’t understand. It looks beautiful but has no real meaning and does not tell a story.
This Russian family drama is brilliantly directed in primary colours that run and bleed like wounded soldiers. It’s full of stark imagery and an edgy style honed by an intense performance from Darya Zhovnar in the lead role.
Sadly, with everything in place to make a powerful film, there is nowhere for this vehicle to go. There are small stories which are resolved and others which evaporate but nothing strong enough to pull us into the film and take us away.
Out of a possible 10, I have 6 Fs to give.
